In his first season with Mercedes, George Russell crossed the line in third position at the FORMULA 1 AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX 2022 to record his first podium with his new team.
In his fourth race for Mercedes, Russell finished behind Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez to pick up 15 points, moving to second in the FIA Formula 1 Drivers' World Championship. The Englishman was driving well, but had a huge strategy boost after a Vettel crash on lap 24 enabled the Brit to pit under the Safety Car and leapfrog his Mercedes team-mate, Lewis Hamilton. When Max Verstappen then retired on lap 34 it left the door open for Russell, who took the opportunity with both hands to record an impressive P3 finish.
