Max Verstappen overtook championship rival Lewis
Hamilton on the final lap of the Formula 1 Abu Dhabi
Grand Prix to win his first World Championship.
Hamilton had a healthy lead over Verstappen as the race entered its
closing stages and it seemed it was inevitable he would pick up his
eighth World Championship. However, with five laps to go, Latifi's
crash led to a safety car giving Verstappen the chance to pit. With only
one lap of racing left, Verstappen on fresh tyres was able to close the
gap on Hamilton and an incredible one lap sprint finish followed. The
Dutchman overtook Hamilton on turn 5 and held on for a dramatic
last-gasp win to claim the FIA Formula 1 Drivers' World Championship.
